How Much Mulch Do I Need?
Determining how much mulch you need depends on the square footage of your garden beds and how deep you want the mulch layer. For most landscaping projects, a depth of 2 to 4 inches is ideal for weed suppression and moisture retention.
The Basic Formula
To calculate mulch by the cubic yard:
Cubic Yards = (Area in sq ft × Depth in inches) ÷ 324

Example: Standard Garden Bed
If you have a garden bed that is 20 feet long and 5 feet wide:
- Area: 20 × 5 = 100 sq ft
- Desired Depth: 3 inches
- Calculation: (100 × 3) ÷ 324 = 0.93 cubic yards
You would order 1 cubic yard of bulk mulch.
How Many Bags of Mulch Are in a Cubic Yard?
If you are buying bagged mulch from a home improvement store, you need to know how many bags equal one cubic yard (27 cubic feet).
- 2 Cubic Foot Bags: 13.5 bags equal one cubic yard.
- 1.5 Cubic Foot Bags: 18 bags equal one cubic yard.
- 3 Cubic Foot Bags: 9 bags equal one cubic yard.
Always check the bag size before purchasing. If you need 2 cubic yards, you will need 27 bags of the standard 2-cubic-foot size.
